Prosthetic Space
Prosthetic Space project explores the human body in relation to its surrounding space It offers enhancement of the body through using artificial ‘prosthetic limbs’ and investigates the impact of such distorted proportions on the wearer of the prosthetic limb. ‘How does the body remember the space’ asks Gaston Bachelard. I ask how differently the body remembers – and perceives the space if taken out of its comfort zone and stretched and increased in its spatial disposition?
The prosthetic limbs are of simple design to be slipped on and worn on arms, hands and feet. They are made of different materials and with different purpose in mind to offer a variety of body pro-longings and a range of different sensations coming from such variety. The prosthetic limbs are made of light wood and wire frames and the surface of papier-mâché and soft materials such as foam and textile.
As part of a large-scale project Prosthetic Space, Prosthetic Poetry is a playful, interactive project that invites anyone to take part. It is a poetic treasure-hunt, a reminiscence of children’s play.
Prosthetic Poetry explores and stretches the spatial potential of the body through concept of 'prosthetic limbs' whilst at the same time emphasises elements of enjoyment and of collaborative work. It scrutinizes the traditional conception of (exhibition) space; presents it in a different perspective and offers new dimensions of interaction with objects surrounding the body.
